The Bishop’s Wife Movie Review (Blu-ray)

It’s Christmas and so continues the theme in my The Bishop’s Wife movie review. Have you seen The Bishop’s Wife?  It’s not on television as much as It’s A Wonderful Life or A Christmas Carol but this is a must watch every Christmas for me.

Plot

Starring Cary Grant as Dudley an Angel sent to help Bishop Henry Brougham (David Niven) who has lost touch with what really matters in life.

The Bishop is struggling to raise enough money to build a new cathedral.  In fact the catherdral is all consuming leaving his wife Julia (Loretta Young) wondering what has happened to the man she fell in love with.

Enter Dudley who announces straight away to the Bishop that he is an angel here to help, not surprisingly Bishop Henry doesn’t quite believe him.  This is of course set at Christmas with plenty of snow and really great christmassy atmosphere.

Is Dudley really an angel?  Is he really here to help?  I not going to spoil it by answering those questions for those yet to watch this Christmas classic.  What I will say is I think this is an outstanding film.  Cary Grant is on top form and there is a great chemstry / tension between him and Loretta Young (The Bishop’s Wife), whilst David Niven also put in a great performance as the Bishop.

Conclusion – The Bishop’s Wife Movie Review (Blu-ray)The Bishop's Wife (1947)

So great acting, great story and a great looking film set at Christmas, what more could you ask for?

Oh and yes this is a black and white film which adds to the feel like only black and white can.  Think how It’s A Wonderful Life feels in black and white with James Stewart running down the road.  It’s not the same in the colorised version.

If this film has somehow passed you by you are in for a treat, trust me it’s a classic you will love it.  Ok I can’t guarantee you will all love it, but I would be surprised if the majority of you don’t just love as much as I do.

If you are lucky you may just spot it on television this year if not there’s always the Blu-ray / DVD or maybe on you preferred streaming service…

So what is my movie rating for The Bishop’s Wife (1947)?Recommended Films

Have a great Christmas and if you are still not convinced by my recommendation check out the original 1947 trailer unfortunately it doesn’t really show the film.

so you will have to make do with a short clip to give you a small tast of the film…

I hope you are enjoying our recommended movies series as it is only just the beginning…
