The Orphanage (2007) Blu-ray Review

Halloween’s nearly here so it’s time to take a look at a few horror films. The title I’m taking a look at here is in Spanish with English subtitles. Stay with me I’m generally not a fan of having to read subtitles whilst trying not to miss any of the onscreen horror. However this film does come highly rated so I decided to give it a go, was it worth the effort? Let’s find out so without further ado here’s The Orphanage Blu-ray Review.

Plot

As a child Laura lived in an orphanage before finally being adopted, years later she returns and with plans to reopen the orphanage but this time as a special facility for disable children. Laura is married to Carlos and they have a seven year old adopted son named Simon whom suffers from a serious medical condition.

Simon tells his mother that he has a new friend called Tomas which his mother believes to be just another imaginary friend. One day Simon goes missing prompting an all out police search made all the more urgent as he requires medication.

Laura begins to experience strange occurrences around the house, is Simon or something from beyond trying to contact her?

Style / DirectionThe Orphanage Blu-ray Review (2007)

The film is directed by J. A. Bayona with the cinematography side of things taken care of by Óscar Faura. First off this is a Spanish horror film that comes with subtitles, don’t however let that put you off as The Orphanage is a rather special movie.

The location of the orphanage by the coast near a lighthouse and caves allows for some outstanding pieces of cinematography. Then there is the orphanage itself a large house with plenty of rooms and a nice big staircase all of which are perfect for creating that unnerving feeling. It really is a visually impressive film.

Music / Audio Effects

The music is by Fernando Velázquez and provides a suitably unnerving score.

Acting / Characters

The acting on the whole is rather good none more so than Belén Rueda as Laura the main character that drives the story.

  • Belén Rueda as Laura
  • Fernando Cayo as Carlos
  • Roger Príncep as Simón, Laura and Carlos’s adopted son
  • Mabel Rivera as Pilar, the head police psychologist
  • Montserrat Carulla as Benigna Escobeda, a former worker at the orphanage
  • Geraldine Chaplin as Aurora, the medium
  • Andrés Gertrúdix as Enrique, Aurora’s sound technician.
  • Edgar Vivar as Prof. Leo Balabán
  • Óscar Casas as Tomás
Conclusion – The Orphanage Film Review

The Orphanage is an incredibly stylish and well made horror film that has an intriguing plotline. Despite being subtitled I wouldn’t let that put you off watching this rather special Spanish horror flick.

Clearly the picture quality is not an issue being a 2007 released film so I’ll move on to the extras.

On the extras front there’s a quite a few documentaries that personally I thought were a little too hard going mainly to them being in Spanish with English subtitles.
