Actor John Hurt dies aged 77

Sad news as actor John Hurt dies aged 77. Sir John, an award winning actor had been suffering from pancreatic cancer since 2015 and had been receiving treatment.

Despite this he had continued to work on various projects.

Born John Vincent Hurt, 22 January 1940 in Derbyshire, England his first film role came in 1962 with The Wild and the Willing.  However his first main role came in 1966 A Man for All Seasons.

He died aged 77 on 25th January 2017

Known for so many different roles including his unforgettable role in Ridley Scott’s sci-fi film Alien (1979). A year later he played John Merrick in The Elephant Man (1980).

TV Career

With such a film full career you would be forgiven for thinking there was not any time left for television. However he appeared in many TV series over the years with I, Claudius (1976) in which he played Caligula being one of his most remembered roles.

In 2013 he appeared in the BBC’s Doctor Who 50th anniversary episode The Day of the Doctor. He played The War Doctor alongside David Tennant and Matt Smith. In fact he proved so popular in this role that he continued it on audio with Big Finish Productions with his last one due out this February.

As well as film, TV and audio he even appeared in the 1996 sci-fi computer game Privateer 2: The Darkening.

Not many actors can claim to have had such a varied career.
