If you happen to love a good horror film you have no doubt seen or a least heard of Annabelle. The film I’m reviewing here is the 2017 one in which we discover the origins of that damn spooky doll. So without further ado here’s my Annabelle Creation blu-ray review.

Plot
The film begins in 1943 with doll maker Samuel Mullins, his wife Esther and daughter Annabelle going about their business. However following a tragic accident they lose their daughter. Skip forward 12 years and the Mullins are still struggling to come to terms with their loss and decide to open up the house to take in six girls left homeless by the closing of an orphanage. Along with the girls comes Sister Charlotte whom is responsible for their wellbeing.
Ester Mullins resides in a downstairs bedroom with Samuel but only he is seen by the girls. The girls are free to go where they want all apart from Annabelle’s old room which remains locked. Soon after moving in the girls begin to experience a couple of strange events, none more than Janice who finds herself led to the locked room only to find it open. Upon entering she sees a dollhouse and a strange spooky looking doll. From here on in events begin to spiral out of control.
Style / Direction
The film is not only directed by David F. Sandberg but he also wrote it as well. On the cinematography side of things that’s taken care of by Maxime Alexandre. I have to admit the cinematography and the location of a house in a dusty landscape fits perfectly. It’s a film that oozes style, I also love the camera angles used whether it’s the great framing or the big sweeping shots they really ramp-up the sheer uneasiness.
The house itself is perfect, with plenty of well laid out rooms along with a big staircase that comes equipped with a stair lift which plays a significant role later in the film.
I really don’t have anything negative to say on the filmmaking side of things.
Music / Audio Effects
The music is by Benjamin Wallfisch and provides a suitably unnerving score that has plenty of horror stings to make you jump out of your seat.
Acting / Characters
The acting for the most part is pretty good with the standout performances coming from two of the children, Talitha Bateman as Janice and Lulu Wilson as Linda. These two are best friends with Janice suffering from the effects of polo that leaves her struggling to walk. The film relies on both of these actresses to really make the film work well and they certainly impress.
Stephanie Sigman as Sister Charlotte brings the religious angle as she initially dismisses the children’s fears. She plays the role competently but is more of a background character for the most part.
Anthony LaPaglia as doll maker Samuel Mullins is a bit of odd fellow certainly around the six girls and the reason for that is revealed later in the film. This gives the film an uncomfortable feeling which is exactly what you want in a horror movie.

Conclusion: Annabelle Creation Film Review
Annabelle Creation conveys a good horror experience for the most part, it’s exceptionally well shot, the location is perfect and the two young girls deliver standout performances. If you love The Conjuring films then Annabelle: Creation is a must see.

Clearly the picture quality is not an issue being a 2017 released film so I’ll move on to the extras. On the extras front there’s a couple of interesting documentaries including the reasons why certain scenes were cut.
The other documentary worth taking a look at is Directing Annabelle Creation in which director David F. Sandberg reveals just how he directed the film, a must for any budding filmmaker.
