Chain Reaction Blu-ray Review – 1996 Sci-fi Thriller

Having already looked at the first John Wick films and the third one currently in cinemas it’s time to take a look another at Keanu Reeves film. This one’s a sci-fi thriller also starring Morgan Freeman, Chain Reaction (1996). It’s available now on Blu-ray, but is it worth your time? Let’s find out so without further ado here’s my Chain Reaction blu-ray review.

  • Chain Reaction (1996)
  • Genre: Sci-fi Thriller
  • Directed by Andrew Davis
  • UK Rating 12
  • Discs: 1
    Released By 20th Century Fox
  • Blu-ray Released: 11 June 2007

Plot

A team of scientists finds an efficient way of producing hydrogen and oxygen atoms from water. This could result in cleaner and cheaper energy. However such a discovery would not be welcomed by all including the oil companies and certain government agencies.

Following their discovery the team are eager to share the news with the rest of the scientific community. However before they can do so there is a huge explosion. Was it a mere accident or was this a deliberate act?

Style / Direction

The films directed by Andrew Davis whilst the cinematography handled by Frank Tidy. Chain Reaction is a well made fast paced sci-fi thriller that I encourage you to take a look at or re-visit.

Music / Audio Effects

The music is provided by Jerry Goldsmith and whilst the score works well enough it’s more on the functional side. That said considering just how many great scores he’s composed I can forgive Goldsmith for just having a decent one from time to time.

Acting / Characters

Good acting performances all-round makes for a hugely entertaining sci-fi thriller.

Keanu Reeves stars as student machinist Eddie Kasalivich. He’s one of the team members working on the hydrogen experiment. He plays it well enough keeping you invested in his characters story throughout.

Rachel Weisz takes on the role of physicist Dr. Lily Sinclair another member of the science team. Reeves and Weisz’s character find their fates strangely bound together. They have good chemistry which really helps make the film enjoyable.

Morgan Freeman puts in another strong and dominating performance as Dr. Paul Shannon. He’s the one in charge and the head of the experiment. As you might expect Freeman’s acting impresses once more.

One last actor I should mention is Brian Cox as Lyman Earl Collier. He’s a man that decides to take matters into his own hands and doesn’t care whose lives are caught by his actions.

  • Keanu Reeves as Eddie Kasalivich

Conclusion: Chain Reaction Blu-ray Review

The films from 1996 and thankfully the picture quality is excellent with the exception for a couple of scenes.  Those occur right at the end of the film and have a grainy and noisy look. This only happens for a few seconds and doesn’t really spoil the otherwise perfect image quality. There’s nothing really to report on the extras front.
