If you have been following my Nicolas Cage season you will have noticed one film in particular that has so far been missing from my reviews a certain 90’s action movie. It sees Cage stars alongside the likes of John Cusack and John Malkovich so without further ado here’s my Con Air (1997) Blu-ray Review.
- Con Air (1997)
- Genre: Action
- Directed by Simon West
- Running Time: 115 Mins
- UK Rating 18
- Discs: 1
- Released By Walt Disney
- Blu-ray Released: 2 July 2007 (UK)
When Army Ranger Cameron Poe gets into a drunken fight with a bunch of locals in order to protect his pregnant wife Tricia he inadvertently kills one of the men. He is found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to ten years in prison. Eight years later he finds himself eligible for parole and takes a prison flight to Alabama where he is to meet up with his wife and daughter. However the flight also contains some of the sickest and most dangerous convicts in American. Once aboard it soon becomes apparent that one of the convicts Cyrus (John Malkovich) has planned to take charge of the plane.
It looks like Cameron won’t be heading home any time soon.
Style / Direction
The film is directed by Simon West with the cinematography side of things taken care of by David Tattersall. Let’s get straight to it, Con Air is an action packed film that never has a dull moment. Those action sequences are pretty epic and really make for an entertaining action movie.
Music / Audio Effects
The music is composed by Mark Mancina & Trevor Rabin.
Acting / Characters
The film is packed full of familiar faces including Nicolas Cage, John Cusack, John Malkovich, Ving Rhames and the creepy Steve Buscemi.
All play their roles exceptionally well with a truly outstanding performance coming from the real villain of the film John Malkovich as “Cyrus the Virus” Grissom. He’s one of those characters that’s extremely intelligent but also somewhat psychotic.
- Nicolas Cage as Cameron Poe
- John Cusack as Vince Larkin
- John Malkovich as Cyrus “Cyrus the Virus” Grissom
- Steve Buscemi as Garland “The Marietta Mangler” Greene
- Ving Rhames as Nathan “Diamond Dog” Jones
- Colm Meaney as DEA agent Duncan Malloy
- Danny Trejo as Johnny “Johnny 23” Baca
- M. C. Gainey as Earl “Swamp Thing” Williams
- Nick Chinlund as William “Billy Bedlam” Bedford
- Dave Chappelle as Joe “Pinball” Parker
- Mykelti Williamson as Mike “Baby-O” O’Dell
- Rachel Ticotin as Guard Sally Bishop

Conclusion – Con Air Film Review
If you are looking for a slightly over the top action film then look no further than Con Air. It’s an extremely entertaining ride packed full of explosions, fights and gunfire just what you want from a proper action movie which Con Air assuredly is.
This one’s a must for all fans of the genre which I most certainly am.

Con Air (1997) Blu-ray Review
The film’s from 1997 but the picture quality is simply flawless, the image is sharp and free from any marks whilst the colours are vibrant, what more could you ask for.
So on to the extras and there are a couple of very short features that give a taste of how the film came to be and a couple of interviews with cast and crew. It’s not the greatest set of extras but better than not having any.
- A View From Above (5 mins)
- The Destruction of Las Vegas (3 mins)
