Next up in my look at all of the Nicolas Cage films available on Bluray in the UK is the supernatural action/comedy Drive Angry in which he plays a man back from Hell. So without further ado here’s my Drive Angry blu-ray review.
- Drive Angry (2011)
- Genre: Supernatural Action/Comedy
- UK Rating 18
- Discs: 1
- Released By Lionsgate
- Blu-ray Released: 10 October 2011
Plot
Milton (Nicolas Cage) is back from the dead in order to save his granddaughter and to seek revenge from the man responsible for the death of his daughter. However he hasn’t come empty handed, with him he has Satan’s personal gun, the Godkiller.
Style / Direction
The film is directed by Patrick Lussier with the cinematography side of things taken care of by Brian Pearson.
Make no mistake this film has an action/comedy vibe right from the first few seconds. There are lots of brutal killings and maiming with lots of blood and body parts flying through the air. This style suits the film perfectly and works to the stories benefit. Filmed in 3D during that nonsense fad, although I’m reviewing it in 2D, there are some obvious 3D gimmick shots used. That said those moments don’t affect the overall enjoyment for those watching the 2D or proper version as I would call it.
There are some CGI effects such as the bridge to Hell which again suit the look and style of the film.
Music / Audio Effects
The music is composed by Michael Wandmacher although the songs that feature perhaps are the main reason the films sound design works so well. It’s all very angry heavy rocky kind of a style.
Acting / Characters
Whilst I doubt any of the actors are going to win any awards for their performance in Drive Angry everyone plays their role extremely well.
Nicolas Cage is great as the lead, playing an indestructible guy back from the dead, although he sure takes quite a bit of beating.
Amber Heard is equally tough, knocking seven bells out of pretty much every guy that crosses her. She suits her character well along with being the perfect sidekick to the man from Hell.
Billy Burke is also worthy of a mention, he plays Jonah King a Satanist that believes he has a pact with the devil and is also the man responsible for the death of Milton’s daughter. He plays the role of a gun slinging preacher type.
Finally there’s the excellent and rather cool William Fichtner as the Accountant. He’s the guy tasked with bringing Milton back home to Hell. His pursuit of Milton brings some excellent moments and sees him deliver some great lines. His character really adds the cool factor and even more humour to proceedings.
Cast
- Nicolas Cage as Milton
- Amber Heard as Piper
- William Fichtner as the Accountant
- Billy Burke as Jonah King
- David Morse as Webster
Conclusion: Drive Angry (2011) Film Review
Clearly Drive Angry was supposed to a big 3D picture, which kind of bombed at the box office having reportedly had a budget of around $50m it only brought in just under $30m. That however whilst unfortunate may well have been down to the marketing of 3D. I watched in 2D and found it to be a thoroughly entertaining romp of a film. Its funny when it needs to be, has plenty of action along with an exciting story. We need more films like this that don’t take themselves too serious but come from a well conceived idea.

Conclusion: Drive Angry Blu-ray Review
The good news is the film is from 2011 and therefore has zero problems in the picture quality department. Moving swiftly on to the extras reveals an interesting making of documentary “How To Drive Angry” being the only extras really worth watching. There’s also “Milton’s Mayhem” which is more of kill counter of computer awarded score for each way an opponent is dispatched.
