Get Out Blu-ray Review – Chilling 2017 Horror

I’m more of a classic horror fan in many ways but every now and again a new one comes around that really hits the spot. I’m taking a look at the 2017 horror film Get Out. The thing is I wasn’t particularly taken with the trailer so never saw it at the cinema, did I miss out on a modern classic? Time to find out, so without further ado here’s my Get Out Blu-ray Review.

  • Get Out (2017)
  • UK Rating 15
  • Discs: 1
  • Released By Universal
  • Blu-ray Released: 24 July 2017

Plot

Chris, a black man travels to meet his white girlfriend’s family. Upon arriving he realises that the colour of his skin and his physical attributes is all the family seems to talk about. Fortunately his girlfriend Rose is on hand to support him through this uncomfortable experience.

In fact it’s not only his girlfriend’s family who are keen to know more about him but also their friends. To further add to the weird vibe going on the family have a couple of black people as hired help. In fact they come across as the strangest and most worrying of all.

As Chris feels more and more uncomfortable with the situation he begins to learn just what is really going on and why he is there. Should he GET OUT, I think we all know the answer to that!

Style / Direction

The pacing is the key aspect to this film and fortunately for the most part they get it just about right. Right from the off the film makes you uncomfortable in two way, firstly the obvious race issue that Chris finds himself at the centre of. Secondly other than Chris and his girlfriend Rose everyone at the family home gives you the creeps.

Written and directed by Jordan Peele, with the cinematography being handled by Toby Oliver.

Music / Audio Effects

Functional whilst conveying the moments of tension rather well with the music being provided by Michael Abels.

Acting / Characters

Daniel Kaluuya as Chris Washington is the star of film, he plays his part very well and is convincing. Plus I liked the way he concludes proceedings.

Allison Williams as Rose Armitage is the other key character and is largely the reason the film works so well. She comes across as the perfect girlfriend and eases Chris’s anxieties.

These two characters really are central to making Get Out work as pretty much every other character is just plain weird. That is except for Chris’s best friend Rod Williams played by Lil Rel Howery. He is a TSA officer and takes it upon himself to do some detective work. He also brings some much needed humour to proceeding and really gives the film a lift when he is present in a scene.

Conclusion: Get Out (2017) Film Review

The film trailer didn’t really impress my all that much but I’m happy to say having just watched the whole movie that I actually found it to be rather good. In fact credit should be given for such an original take in the horror genre. The film has a couple of big plot twists one I think you will see coming and the other certainly changes your thinking as to the reason behind the terror.

Overall I’d say it’s an intelligently written and constructed horror film that’s certainly well worth a look.

Conclusion: Get Out Blu-ray Review

Clearly the picture and sound are outstanding as it’s a brand new film but what else do you get when you purchase the Blu-ray version?

Well the alternate ending is the one you would have expected them to have gone with but I firmly believe the ending they chose works so much better. Overall the extras provide enough insight without dragging on to long.
