Ghost Rider Blu-ray Review – 2007 Supernatural Fun

Nicolas Cage is a very interesting actor and one I on the whole I enjoy watching. To that end I’m currently having a bit of a Nicolas Cage season reviewing all of the movies that are currently available on Blu-ray. The one I’m taking a look at here is Ghost Rider from 2007 so without further ado here’s my Ghost Rider (2007) Blu-ray Review.

  • Ghost Rider (2007)
  • Genre: Supernatural / Action
  • Directed by Mark Steven Johnson
  • UK Rating 15
  • Released By Sony Pictures
  • Blu-ray Released: 2 July 2007

Plot

When a young Johnny Blaze makes a pact with the devil in order to save a loved one, he becomes the devil’s Ghost Rider. His job is to seek out the souls of the guilty and sinful and delivery them to him. Johnny Blaze is a daredevil jumping his bike over various obstacles, but no matter how many times he crashes his bike he simply walks away unscathed. Is this the work of the devil? Johnny knows sooner or later the devil will return to collect upon their agreement.

Style / Direction

The film is directed by Mark Steven Johnson with the cinematography side of things that’s taken care of by Russell Boyd. There are plenty of fiery special effects on show to represent the Ghost Rider’s hellish connections. Visually Ghost Rider does an excellent job of conveying that supernatural horror aspects. Pacing wise the film is spot on as the as the story and action moves a fast pace making an incredibly exciting ride.

Music / Audio Effects

The music is by Christopher Young and it manages to blend seamlessly with the visuals to give the perfect supernatural tone, oh and the songs chosen are also perfect.

Acting / Characters

The acting is very good from all the main characters which help to bring this supernatural tale to life. Nicolas Cage is very good as the slightly nuts daredevil Johnny Blaze turned soul taker.

Eva Mendes plays Roxanne Simpson, Johnny’s childhood sweetheart, Cage and Mendes work well together creating a spark or two when their characters share a scene.

The bad guy in all of this other than the devil himself is that of Wes Bentley who plays Blackheart / Legion or the devils son. He is out to become more powerful than the devil and seeks out to absorb a thousand souls. He plays this well striking the right tone, dark and serious enough to prove a decent adversary.

Sam Elliott plays Carter Slade / Caretaker and is a kind of guide to Johnny with a hidden past. He is very good giving the film some weight in performance. For me he really enhances the overall movie.

Finally let’s not forget the devil played by Peter Fonda, he’s a man of mystery appearing only when people are at their lowest where upon he offers them an apparent solution for a price. He is well cast coming across in a very sinister and uneasy manner.
