high spirits blu-ray review

It’s time for an eighties comedy horror classic starring Steve Guttenberg, Daryl Hannah and Peter O’Toole to name just three of the starring actors. Yes I’m talking High Spirits from 1988. It’s just come out on blu-ray released by Final Cut Entertainment. How has the blu-ray release turned out? Let’s find out, so without further ado here’s my High Spirits Blu-ray Review.

  • High Spirits (1988)
  • Genre: Comedy, Horror
  • Directed by Neil Jordan
  • UK Rating 12
  • Discs: 1
  • Released By Final Cut Entertainment
  • Blu-ray Released: 24 August 2020

Plot

Peter Plunkett (Peter O’Toole) is the owner of dilapidated Irish castle hotel that’s in debt. Furthermore a rich American business man is threatening to relocate the castle to America. Peter devises a way to attract new customers by turning the castle into a haunted attraction. Little does he know he already has plenty of real spirits at hand.

Style / Direction

The film was directed by Neil Jordan whilst Alex Thomson handled the cinematography.

Music / Audio Effects

The music is provided by George Fenton and contains lots of Irish folk sounds mixed into a comedy horror vibe. It works exceptioannally well.

Acting / Characters

High Spirits boasts a fabulous cast that includes, Peter O’Toole, Steve Guttenberg, Daryl Hannah, Beverly D’Angelo and Liam Neeson. These actors really do make the movie a fun and entertaining comedy horror.

Oh and I should also mention Liz Smith as Mrs Plunkett, Peter’s mother who also produces a fabulous performance.

Peter O’Toole as Peter Plunkett the owner of dilapidated Irish castle hotel is a drunk on the verge of losing everything. His performance is absolutely superb especially as he keeps on attempting suicide be hanging only to be stopped by a change of circumstances each time.

Guttenberg and Daryl Hannah provide the romance which is at the heart of the plot. Daryl Hannah is brilliant in these sorts of roles. In many ways it’s a similar kind of role to the one she has in Splash albeit minus the mermaid stuff. In High Spirits she plays a Ghost, Mary Plunkett Brogan trapped in a cycle of events that must play out the same way each night.

Steve Guttenberg was always good in all of those comedy movies from the eighties such Police Academy and Short Circuit. Therefore he’s the perfect choice as Jack an American married to Sharon (Beverly D’Angelo) whose father is a wealthy man intent on relocating the hotel to sunnier climes.

Cast
  • Steve Guttenberg as Jack
  • Daryl Hannah as Mary Plunkett Brogan
  • Peter O’Toole as Peter Plunkett

I’ve always enjoyed the film and it’s sad that these kinds of movies can no longer be made in the current era. It’s funny entertaining romp with a fabulous cast of actors.

Conclusion: High Spirits Blu-ray Review

I have to admit seeing MGM’s name on the blu-ray box made me a little worried as to the quality of the overall image. Thankfully barring a couple of tiny white marks the picture quality is excellent. I mean its sharp, clear image with rich colours just the way it should look. I’m very impressed if truth be told.

There aren’t any extras but I’m fine with that as long as the picture quality is good which as I’ve just discussed is. Add this one to your movies to own on blu-ray list.
