It’s time for my Jack Reacher Never Go Back blu-ray review, I loved the first Jack Reacher film so I had high hopes for the latest film.
It recently released on our favourite format, blu-ray, so does Jack Reacher Never Go Back (2016) tick all of the boxes?
- Jack Reacher Never Go Back Blu-ray Review (2016)

Plot
Jack Reacher is on a mission, he wants to repay Major Turner who has recently helped him out of a tricky situation by taking her to dinner. However when he arrives in DC he finds she has been arrested for stealing military secrets. Reacher decides to look into her case and uncovers a plot to cover up some illegal arms dealings by a former government contractor.
Reacher and the Major are in effect fugitives being hunted down by both the military and former military who now work for an arms contractor. The contractor needs to clean up any evidence of wrong doing and that means eliminating everyone connected.
To add further complication to proceedings Reacher finds he is being pursued for unpaid child maintenance for the last 15 years for a daughter he had no idea existed. This is all going to end in a very messy way.
The story is based on the novel by Lee Child.
Style / Direction
The film is directed by Edward Zwick with the cinematography handled by Oliver Wood.
It you like fast paced action then Jack Reacher Never Go Back ticks that box. However this definitely an action thriller that sees Reacher in a few uncomfortable scenes with two woman. As he helps the Major prove her innocence he also has deal with the fact he may have 15 year old daughter. This adds a whole new dynamic to the Reacher character and his unease around it.
The film looks amazing I mean it’s really well shot, New Orleans features heavily and the filmmakers really do capture that vibe.
The action scenes feel just about perfect which is some going in this day and age with two other big franchises going big on that stuff, Bond and Bourne. Reacher more than holds his own in that department.
Good job!
Music / Audio Effects
The music is provided by Henry Jackman. After the film had finished I could not really remember any on the music from the film but it seemed fine whilst watching it. I can only conclude that it did it’s intended to do without being particularly memorable.
Acting / Characters
Tom Cruise seems the perfect fit as Jack Reacher, he plays it well minimal in many ways. He not one for long speeches but when he talks you better listen. This outing sees him confront a potential life changing personal revelation.
Cobie Smulders plays Major Susan Turner who finds herself arrested and charged with giving or selling state secrets. She plays a hard no nonsense Major who can more that handle herself, this causes a few clashes with Reacher. She plays it well and the main characters bounce off each other very well along with plenty of sexual chemistry just to spice things up.
Danika Yarosh plays Samantha the young women Reacher is led to believe is his daughter. Unfortunately this revelation only serves to put her life in jeopardy. She plays this so well that you are unsure whether she is or isn’t Reacher’s daughter as she shares many of his traits. However if you want to know the answer you are just going to have to watch the film.
Last but not least is Reacher’s arch enemy / rival, played by Patrick Heusinger and credited as The Hunter. He is an ex-military special ops guy now freelance who to be honest is a little unhinged. He plays this well enough and adds that out of control whilst being incredibly skilled at what he does. For those wondering what he’s good at, that would be killing people just in case you hadn’t work it out.
Oh and keep an eye out for the author of the Jack Reacher novels Lee Child who makes another cameo appearance. He plays the guy checking Reacher’s gear in. In the first film he plays a cop so I guess we can expect him to pop up in any further films.
Conclusion: Jack Reacher Never Go Back (2016) Film Review
I thoroughly enjoyed Never Go Back and am anticipating further Jack Reacher films starring Tom Cruise in the future. The writer of the Jack Reacher series Lee Child has 22 books with the twenty second due out later this year (November) so plenty more adventures to choose from.
Back to Never Go Back and it has everything I look for in these types of films. Good acting, and interesting story and lots of fast paced action.
Having watched this I feel inclined to dig out the first Blu-ray, Jack Reacher.
I want more and I can’t say the same for many film franchises.
