John Wick Blu-ray Review – An Instant Classic from 2014

It’s time for a John Wick Blu-ray Review seeing as John Wick 3’s cinema release is just around the corner. So I’ve decided to take another look at Keanu Reeves in his first to outing as John Wick. It’s a great excuse (not that I need one) to re-visit the first two films which I thoroughly enjoyed and review their Blu-ray releases. You can now purchase the first two films together on both Blu-ray and DVD, whilst 4K versions of are available separately. Right let’s focus on the first John Wick film where it all started back in 2014, here’s my John Wick blu-ray review.

John Wick Blu-ray Review

Plot

John Wick is struggling to come to terms with the loss of a loved one. Unfortunately he isn’t allowed time to grieve as a couple of Russian gangsters take a liking to his classic Mustang car. They break in to his house and steal it and in doing so give Wick a bit of a beating. Worse still is the loss of yet another loved one. However Wick is not the type of guy you want to mess with and he sets out for revenge taking out all that stand in his way.

Style / Direction

The film is directed by Chad Stahelski and David Leitch with the cinematography handled by Jonathan Sela. John Wick is full of action and therefore is in need of a director or directors that know how to shoot those action sequences. Enter Stahelski and Leitch for their directorial debut, not only to they manage to pull off the action scenes but they put together an incredibly fast paced and stylish action movie.

There are some excellent choices of camera angles and shot selection whilst the lighting really suits this dark neo-noir feel they were clearly aiming for.

Music / Audio Effects

The music is composed by Tyler Bates & Joel J. Richard. It really matches the visuals with many scenes taking place in either nightclubs or hotel venues.

Acting / Characters

Keanu Reeves puts in an excellent performance as John Wick I doubt anyone will win any awards for their acting in John Wick but there really are some outstanding action sequences performed by the likes of Reeves.

Michael Nyqvist plays Viggo Tarasov head of a Russian crime organisation and whose son is responsible for bringing the wrath of John Wick.

The casting of the likes of Willem Dafoe and Ian McShane adds a bit of class to the acting side of things whilst Adrianne Palicki as Ms. Perkins turns in an excellent display.

Cast
  • Keanu Reeves as John Wick
  • Michael Nyqvist as Viggo Tarasov
  • Alfie Allen as Iosef Tarasov
  • Willem Dafoe as Marcus
  • Ian McShane as Winston
  • Dean Winters as Avi
  • Adrianne Palicki as Ms. Perkins
  • Bridget Moynahan as Helen Wick

Conclusion: John Wick Film Review

John Wick is a thoroughly entertaining action movie that’s stylishly made and well acted. I’m not really surprised at just how well the first two films have been received as they are simply a blast.

Add John Wick to you must see list of films.
