Looking Glass Blu-ray Review – Gripping 2018 Thriller?

I’m coming towards the end of my Nicolas Cage movie season but fear not there are still a few more films available on blu-ray to review. This time it’s 2018 thriller Looking Glass. Unfortunately the powers that be have decided the UK is only deserving of a poor resolution DVD version so this review is of a foreign imported blu-ray. So should you consider picking it up on blu-ray? Let’s take a look, so without further ado here’s my Looking Glass blu-ray review.

Looking Glass Blu-ray Review

Plot

Ray (Nicolas Cage) and his wife Maggie (Robin Tunney) decide on a fresh start following a tragic event. They decide to buy a motel in the California desert in a small town that’s on not too far from Las Vegas. Purchasing via the internet they only meet the owner Ben once whilst viewing the property. However upon arrival to start their new lives Ben is nowhere to be found. He has however left them a note and the keys to the motel.

As Ray begins to clean up the motel in readiness for the official opening he stumbles across a rather disturbing feature the motel has to offer its new owners.

Style / Direction

The films directed by Tim Hunter whilst Patrick Cady is responsible for the cinematography. First off I should say that Looking Glass is a well made and good looking thriller. Its style perfectly fits the genre and I have no issues on the the visual direction or the cinematography front. As you might expect most but not all of the film takes place at the motel.

Music / Audio Effects

The music is provided by Mark Adler & Kristin Gundred.

Acting / Characters

The film centres on Ray (Nicolas Cage) and Maggie (Robin Tunney) and their troubled relationship. They both produce fine performances that really elevate a rather average story to a far more interesting one.

Add in the rather Jekyll and Hyde local deputy sheriff Howard played by Marc Blucas and you have a highly enjoyable movie.

Cast
  • Nicolas Cage as Ray
  • Robin Tunney as Maggie
  • Marc Blucas as Howard
  • Ernie Lively as Tommy
  • Jacque Gray as Jessica “Room 6”
  • Kassia Conway as Strawberry Blonde
  • Bill Bolender as Ben
  • Kimmy Jimenez as Becky
  • Barry Jay Minoff as Gas Station Owner

  • Rebecca Beckham as Tommy’s Girl #5

Conclusion: Looking Glass (2018) Film Review

Looking Glass is an entertaining thriller that sees a good Nicolas Cage performance. The only real negative regarding the film is the predictable end to the story. Don’t expect to be blown away with an astounding twist as the film follows the path you’ll expect. That said I did enjoy that journey even if I did know the final destination.

This one’s well worth a look if you have a hankering for a decent thriller.

Conclusion: Looking Glass Blu-ray Review

Other than the lack of a UK bluray release there are no issues to report. The picture quality as you would expect from a 2018 film is perfect. There are no extras included but it seems we’re lucky just to be able to obtain the film on blu-ray even if its via a foreign version.
