Next Blu-ray Review – Exceptional 2007 Sci-fi Thriller?

It time a little sci-fi, here’s my Next (2007) blu-ray review. Nicolas Cage is a very interesting actor and one for the most part I enjoy watching. To that end I’m currently having a bit of a Nicolas Cage season reviewing all of his movies that are currently available on Blu-ray in the UK.

The one I’m taking a look at here is Next from 2007, it’s a sci-fi action film based on the novel The Golden Man by Philip K. Dick.

  • Next (2007)
  • Genre: Sci-fi / Action Thriller
  • Directed by Lee Tamahori
  • UK Rating 12
  • Released By Entertainment In Video
  • Blu-ray Released: 24 September 2007

Plot

Cris Johnson (Nicolas Cage) works as a magician under the stage name of Frank Cadillac. He has a special gift that allows him to see 2 minutes into his own future. He tries to keep this talent quiet but unfortunately for him FBI agent Callie Ferris (Julianne Moore) has worked out what makes him so special. Furthermore terrorists are believed to have transported a nuclear bomb into the country but the authorities are clueless to its current location. This is where Cris comes in, FBI agent Ferris thinks his gift of seeing into the future may help them find the whereabouts of the weapon.

Style / Direction

The film is directed by Lee Tamahori with the cinematography side of things that’s taken care of by David Tattersall. The film employs a couple of camera techniques to illustrate Cris’s ability to see into the future. This works well and helps to avoid any confusion as to what is happening. On the whole the film is pretty slick moving along at an fast pace whilst always developing the plotline thus making for a thoroughly enthralling climax. One other thing worth mentioning is the locations around Arizona are pretty spectacular.

Music / Audio Effects

The music is by Mark Isham and provides a functional score.

Acting / Characters

Nicolas Cage plays magician Frank Cadillac that works in Las Vegas. His special gift of being able to see two minutes into the future makes for a rather interesting character and story. Cage again is particularly impressive in the lead role keeping you thoroughly invested in his characters predicament.

The two other key characters are FBI Special Agent Callie Ferris played by Julianne Moore and Liz Cooper played by Jessica Biel.

Starting with Julianne Moore’s character, she’s a tough no nonsense if a little over the top in her attitude. That said her overall performance seems to fit the film quite well.

Finally Jessica Biel, she plays the love interest to Nicholas Cage’s character. Whilst there’s not a whole lot for her to do she does interact very well in those scenes with Cage and in doing so makes you want to see the two hook up. She manages to convey a genuine chemistry between Liz and Cris which is after all at the heart of the film.

Cast

  • Nicolas Cage as Cris Johnson / Frank Cadillac
  • Julianne Moore as Special Agent Callie Ferris
  • Jessica Biel as Liz Cooper

Conclusion: Next (2007) Film Review

I’ll admit I’d never seen Next (2007) but had I known if was based on the novel The Golden Man by Philip K. Dick I would probably have taken a look upon its cinema release. The story itself has a fascinating premise which the film not only manages to convey exceptionally well but also produces a hugely entertaining action packed sci-fi story.

I highly recommend you take a look at this one if you either like intriguing sci-fi stories or Nicholas Cage as an actor.

Conclusion: Next Blu-ray Review

The film released in 2007 so there are no issues with picture quality so I’ll move on to the special features. There are plenty of interviews with cast and crew along with a look at the special effects all of which gives enough of insight into the making of the film. Overall there is an interesting set of extras that are well worth taking a look at.
