It’s time for the Passengers blu-ray review, I love a good science fiction film so I was curious when the Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt film came out. Having missed it at the cinema, just too many films to watch at the time, I thought I’d take a look at it on blu-ray.
So is Passengers (2016) a must see for science fiction fans?

Plot
The plot is a relatively simple one. The spaceship Avalon is taking 5000 sleeping passenger that are in hibernation for the duration of the journey to a new world and home.
Everything is going seemingly well when the ship experiences a pretty major incident that causes the opening of a pod 90 years before the spaceship is due to reach the intended destination.
With the pod unable to return its occupant to a sleeping state that person is about to discover that they are all alone in deep space with seemingly no hope of surviving to make a new life on a new world.

Style / Direction
The set design looks simply gorgeous, its slick stylish take on the future is simply perfect. The main concourse is clean and feels futuristic but step into the bar and you have a modern take on an art deco style. Put simply the mix and blend really does put this film ahead of a lot of recent sci-fi offering in terms of design.
The outside of the ship also looks pretty spectacular without looking too much like its all CGI.
Whilst Passengers is a sci-fi film with moments of action it is essentially love story. The good news is it works perfectly allowing the viewer to get to know the characters. Seeing the two passengers becoming closer is genuinely heart-warming that is until the story throws a rather large spanner into the works. It all works exceptionally well thanks to a decent story, acting and excellent filmmaking.
The film was directed by Morten Tyldum whilst the cinematography handled by Rodrigo Prieto.
Music / Audio Effects
The music is provided by Thomas Newman and is functional and seems to suit the style of film without being particularly memorable.
Acting / Characters
Without giving too much away you are already probably aware that Passengers focuses on two main characters although there are a few others along the way.
So to the main characters and there are two. They are both passengers aboard the Avalon. Aurora Lane is a writer played by Jennifer Lawrence and Jim Preston, is a mechanic played by Chris Pratt.
The film needs these two actors to have really great chemistry in order to pull off this love story. Fear not Lawrence and Pratt have it in bucket loads and this makes Passengers an incredibly enjoyable watch.
Conclusion: Passengers (2016) Film Review
If you like the idea of a sci-fi love story then Passengers is the film for you. Both main actors turn in exceptionally good performances making this a gripping and tense story.
In one sense this is a cutting edge sci-fi film but in another it kind of feels like an old fashion one and I mean that in a really great way.
