With Christmas just around the corner you no doubt are still scratching your head over what presents to buy everyone. Well if you have a film buff in the family then we have you covered. Simply take a look at our 25 Perfect Christmas Gifts For Movie Lovers guide.

Samsung Q90R

Available in either 55 or 65 inch versions the Samsung Q90R really does offer a stunning picture perfect watching the 4K or standard Blu-ray movies. This is why it has won several awards and has many 5 star reviews. The only really area the Q90R is slightly deficient in sound department. You’ll probably want to connect it to you cinema surround sound setup or a soundbar to fully enjoy the glorious picture quality.

Prices start at around £1750 for the 55″ and go up to £2200 for the 65″.

Samsung UE49RU8000

If the Q90R is a little expensive then there’s the much more reasonably priced Samsung UE49RU8000 which is around £530. It has an excellent picture which is nice and sharp. This really is an excellent television for the £500-600 range. It’s certainly a television I’d be more than happy to watch all of my movies on.

Sony UBP-X700 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray Disc Player

Having watched many standard Blu-rays along with a few 4K Blu-ray titles on this machine I can highly recommend the Sony UBP-X700. It produces a nice crisp, natural-looking picture at an affordable price. Having been on sale since early 2018 it can now be had for a lot less than its launch price of £270.

At the time of writing it was available for around £186. This is definitely one to keep an eye on over the Black Friday sale period.

Panasonic DMP-BDT180EB 3D Smart Blu-Ray Player

For those of you just interested in a good standard Blu-ray player them I recommend taking a look at the Panasonic DMP-BDT180EB which sells from around the £75 mark. It’s not a 4K player despite the 4K logo on the picture below. What it does do however is upscale the picture to 4K.

The DMP-BDT180EB is a very good all-rounder providing both excellent sound and picture.

Bose Solo 5 TV Soundbar System

If your television speakers just aren’t cutting it why not add a little oomph to your home cinema setup with this Bose soundbar system. The Solo 5 comes highly recommended for those not want to fully kit out their room with a full sound system.

Blu-ray / DVD Movies & Television Gift Ideas

Whilst buying a new television or Blu-ray player is great you’re going to want to see them in the best light. That means watching either a standard Blu-ray or even a 4K disc to really show off the amazing visuals.

Below are a few of my recommend purchases includes a mixture of brand new films and some older titles that have been fully restored and released on to glorious Blu-ray. Oh and I’ll also include a few classic television series that have also made it on to Blu-ray.

Let’s continue our 25 Perfect Christmas Gifts For Movie Lovers guide:

Hammer Volume Four: Faces of Fear

Powerhouse Films have been busy releasing lots of classic Hammer films fully restored under their Indicator label. November see’s volume four aka Faces of Fear. This boxset includes these four films:

The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958)

The film stars Hammer legend Peter Cushing alongside Francis Matthews whilst Terence Fisher directs.

There’s good news as this film has undergone a new 4K restoration and is packed full of intersting extras.

The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll (1960)

Also directed by Terence Fisher is The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll (1960) which stars Paul Massie, Dawn Addams and Christopher Lee.

Taste of Fear (1961)

This one’s written by Hammer regular Jimmy Sangster and stars Susan Strasberg, Ronald Lewis, Ann Todd and Christopher Lee.

  • Frenzy (1972)
  • Family Plot (1976)

Another must have purchase for any film buff! Just in case you’re wondering, yes I do own a copy. After-all it is Hitchcock probably the best director of all-time.

John Wick 1/2/3 Triple Boxset

You loved the John Wick films right? Well most people I talk to seem too. Why not get all three movies on Blu-ray for yourself of that movie lover in the family.

The Mule (2018)

Clint Eastwood’s return to acting in The Mule (2018) produced a truly fabulous film. Not content with merely acting in it he also directed it. This one’s great stocking filler.

You can see what I made of it when I reviewed The Mule on Blu-ray a few weeks ago.

Mystery Junction (1951)

A forgotten British crime classic that’s been fully restored and released on to Blu-ray courtesy of Network. I’ll have my Mystery Junction review up very soon. In short it all starts on a train on a snowy night and ends up on at an isolated train station. It’s has that film noir kind of feel and is a perfect gift for lovers of old classic movies.

The Punch and Judy Man (1963)

Tony Hancock fans will see The Punch and Judy Man (1963) as a must have to their collections. Whilst the film fails to live up to Hancock radio and television output it’s still well worth a look. Also available on Blu-ray is his other film The Rebel (1961), both films have been restored.

Clockwise (1986)

Fans of John Cleese are in for a treat as I have two more offerings later on in this ‘Perfect Christmas Gifts For Movie Lovers’ guide. However first up is the comedy film Clockwise from 1986. Whilst not a huge success upon release its gain a cult following in the years that followed. I for one enjoy watching for what that’s worth.

Toy Story 4 (2019)

Surely everybody loves Toy Story? Well why not watch it in stunning high definition via Blu-ray. It’s also available on 4K Blu-ray and DVD. There’s also a boxset containing all four films on Blu-ray if you prefer.

The Secret Life of Pets 2 (2019)

Another family favourite and perfect viewing this Christmas is the animated adventure The Secret Life of Pets 2 (2019).

Stan and Ollie (2018)

Laurel and Hardy fans may be very interested in obtaining a copy of Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly’s biographical comedy-drama film Stan & Ollie (2018).

Nightbreed (1990)

Clive Barker’s cult classic horror Nightbreed has just landed on Blu-ray. Released by Arrow Video I’ve yet to review this version but enjoyed the film previously.

Weird Science (1985)

It’s time for an eighties classic, is a teen comedy science fiction film starring Anthony Michael Hall, Ilan Mitchell-Smith and Kelly LeBrock. Need more information, it’s written and directed by John Hughes.

Arrow Video are the ones releasing this on to Blu-ray and have undertaken a “New restoration by Arrow Films from a 4K scan of the original negative”.

Footsteps in the Fog (1955)

Film noir fans will simply love this British offering from 1955 starring Stewart Granger and Jean Simmons. It has a fabulous story and a brilliant acting performance from Jean Simmons.

Monty Python’s Flying Circus – Complete – Deluxe Edition

If you happen to be or know someone who is a massive Monty Python fan then this Blu-ray boxset is going to be the perfect Christmas gift.

Recently released by Network this is a limited edition offering that comes on 7 discs featuring all 45 episodes. It’s also totally uncut and fully restored. Expect to pay around £150 from the likes of Amazon or as little as £100 direct from Network while stocks last.

Fawlty Towers – The Complete Collection (Blu-ray)

The BBC have been going through their classic’s list and restoring and releasing them on to Blu-ray. Next up is the classic comedy Fawlty Towers starring John Cleese, Prunella Scales, Andrew Sachs and Connie Booth.

Red Dwarf – Complete Series 1-8 (Blu-ray)

Red Dwarf is another classic series to receive the Blu-ray treatment with the first eight series now restored, what the smeg is going on at the BBC?

Do you know someone that would appreciate some classic British sci-fi comedy on Blu-ray?

Man About the House (1974)

If like me you love classic sitcoms such as Man About the House then having the film spin-off fully restored and on Blu-ray is a dream come true. We have Network to thank for this release.

The Likely Lads (1976) Film + 2 Lost Episodes

Another excellent release from Network is the The Likely Lads (1976) film starring Rodney Bewes and James Bolam. But it gets even better as included in this fabulous Blu-ray are two previously lost episodes. Having watched them I can say you’re in for a treat.
