I love a good western particularly ones with Clint Eastwood but also classics from John Wayne such as The Searchers. It’s a genre that doesn’t receive too much attention these days with only the likes of Tarantino seemingly able to pull them off well. However there is a film from 2006 starring Liam Neeson and Pierce Brosnan that somewhat intrigued me into taking a closer look. It’s of course available on blu-ray/DVD, so without further ado here’s the Seraphim Falls blu-ray eview.
- Seraphim Falls (2006)
- Genre: Western
- Directed by David Von Ancken
- UK Rating 15
- Discs: 1
- Released By Icon
- Blu-ray Released: 2008
Plot
Three years following the American Civil War Gideon (Pierce Brosnan) is camping out in the snowy mountains when his is shot in the arm. He must run for his life but without a horse his condition may do for him before the four men pursuing him have a chance to kill him.
Style / Direction
The film was directed by David Von Ancken with the cinematography handled by John Toll. The cinematography is simply breathtaking switching from the snowy mountains to the sweltering desert. As many others have no doubt said the scenery almost becomes another character. I love the way the story plays out in these different surroundings and landscapes, make no mistake Seraphim Falls is a very well made film.
Music / Audio Effects
The music is composed by Harry Gregson-Williams.
Acting / Characters
Liam Neeson plays the bitter revenge fuelled guy out to hunt down the man he holds responsible for the death of his loved ones. Brosnan is that man but as with all things it’s never quite that straightforward. Both actors are terrific and believable with Brosnan in particular impressing with a tough yet guilt ridden character.
The support cast also do well with their given roles with Ed Lauter adding that necessary bit of class. Also keep an eye out for the mysterious Madame Louise played by Anjelica Huston.
Cast
- Liam Neeson as Colonel Morsman Carver
- Pierce Brosnan as Gideon
- Michael Wincott as Hayes

Conclusion: Seraphim Falls (2006) Film Review
In essence Seraphim Falls is a revenge western, it sees two men pitted against each other following personal loss during the American Civil War. Liam Neeson and Pierce Brosnan are those two men and they turn in excellent performances. The story whilst a simple one is also a good one that includes a twist and some mystery.
The cinematography alone makes the film well worth a look but when all filmmaking and acting elements are combined we are left with a somewhat underrated western.
So to conclude I’d have to recommend you take a look at this western if like me it’s somehow passed you by, trust me its well worth a look.
