One of my favourite directors has to be Dario Argento. He defined the Italian giallo for many years. Sleepless was his 2001 return to the giallo genre. Does it hold up against his earlier work? Let’s find out, so without further ado here’s The Sleepless Blu-ray Review.

- Genre: Giallo / Thriller
- Directed by Dario Argento
- Running Time: 115 mins

Following a series of murders the police note they share striking similarities to an earlier case. That case involved a man of limited height. It soon becomes clear that either the original perpetrator is still at large or the police have a copycat on their hands.
Style / Direction
The film was directed by Dario Argento whilst the cinematography is handled by Ronnie Taylor. One thing Argento is well known for are his striking visuals. I feared this 2001 film may not live up to his earlier work but thankfully that is not the case. In fact I’d say Sleepless fits perfectly into the classic era of Dario Argento.
Music / Audio Effects
The music comes from Goblin who of course provided many score for earlier Argento movies. It’s a rocky sound that really goes well with Dario Argento’s filmmaking style and striking visuals.
Acting / Characters
Of cause being a foreign film does mean the actors are largely dubbed. This is simply something you get used if you have watched Italian giallos before. Whilst it’s never ideal it does however do the job. Sure some of the dialogue can come across as a little clumsy too but overall the film and acting works rather well.
Max von Sydow adds the acting gravitas to proceedings and is the key player as the story unfolds.
- Max von Sydow as Ulisse Moretti
- Stefano Dionisi as Giacomo Gallo
- Chiara Caselli as Gloria
- Roberto Zibetti as Lorenzo Betti
- Gabriele Lavia as Dr. Betti
- Paolo Maria Scalondro as Chief Inspector Manni
- Rossella Falk as Laura de Fabritiis
- Roberto Accornero as Fausto
- Barbara Lerici as Angela
- Guido Morbello as Young Detective
- Massimo Sarchielli as Leone
- Diego Casale as Beppe
- Alessandra Comerio as Mrs. Betti
- Elena Marchesini as Mel (Kitten)
- Aldo Massasso as Detective Cascio
Conclusion: Sleepless (2001) Film Review
Sleepless is actually a surprisingly good Argento giallo film. The only reason I say that is because I was led to believe his later work was not on par with his earlier work. In fact I’d say Sleepless is extremely well shot using many of the trademark Argento camera angles and framing that helped to make him the filmmaking legend his is today. Make no mistake this is film I highly recommend giving a look, especially if you loved his earlier work.
The story is typical Argento and feels very much like The Cat O’Nine Tails (1971), The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970) and Deep Red (1975). That is no bad thing either as Dario Argento excels in telling these murder stories.
Add in Goblin’s music score and you have one hell of a horror/thriller!
If you enjoyed my Sleepless Blu-ray Review so far you may want to check out the following films:
- The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970)
- Four Flies On Grey Velvet (1971)
- The Cat O’Nine Tails (1971)
- Deep Red (1975)
Conclusion: Sleepless Blu-ray Review
Being in the UK sometimes means we need to be prepared to import a foreign Blu-ray version of the films we want. Sadly Dario Argento’s Sleepless (2001) is one of those occasions. Fortunately you can pick up the German version via Amazon.co.uk and it works just fine.
The picture quality is excellent with no issues to mention. The image to clean and sharp and I certainly didn’t notice any marks throughtout the 115 minutes.
