The film I’m taking a look at here stars Matt Damon and Emily Blunt and is a sci-fi action film based on a short story by Philip K. Dick titled “Adjustment Team”. So without further ado here’s my The Adjustment Bureau Blu-ray Review.
- The Adjustment Bureau (2011)
- Genre: Sci-fi / Thriller / Romance
- Directed by George Nolfi
- Running Time: 106 Mins
- UK Rating 12
- Released By Universal
- Blu-ray Released: 3 August 2011
Plot
David Norris (Matt Damon) is a Brooklyn Congressman that is running for the United States Senate, however when a couple of embarrassing college pranks are splashed across the media his ratings plummet leading to him losing the election. It’s whilst he is rehearsing his losers speech in the bathroom he encounters his perfect woman Elise (Emily Blunt). The two of them instantly fall for each other but then she leaves. Will he ever see her again? Maybe fate will intervene and bring the two of them back together or maybe The Adjustment Bureau has other ideas.
Style / Direction
The film is directed by George Nolfi with the cinematography side of things that’s taken care of by John Toll. Visually the film shows off New York in a way seldom seen on the big screen. It has some truly beautiful cinematography, blended seamlessly against stunning vistas and those door visual effects. As a door opens it connects to a completely different part of the city. This needs to look right and flow well as this is a key part of making the story appear believable. Fortunately it works exceptionally well and gives the film a sense of urgency and pace.
Music / Audio Effects
The music is by Thomas Newman and it perfectly matches the mood of the film.
Acting / Characters
I have to say I was very impressed by the standard of acting of all involved on The Adjustment Bureau with the two stand outs obviously being Matt Damon and Emily Blunt which the film revolves around. The two have a fabulous on screen chemistry that really lights up the film along with plenty of witty dialogue between the them.
Matt Damon is David Norris a young up and coming political figure that wants to make a difference. However he soon realises that his perfect match a women he initially only knows as Elise is far more important. Unfortunately The Adjustment Bureau will stop at nothing to put Norris’s political ambitions back on plan.
Emily Blunt as Elise really captures the viewers attention right from her very first scene, this performance draws you into the story and has you hoping that everything will work out for the best.
Another key performance comes from Anthony Mackie as Harry Mitchell, he’s one of the members of The Adjustment Bureau but unlike his colleagues he seems to care more. Mackie play the role brilliantly but in a very low key manner. He really is terrific and enhances the overall film.
Two other members of The Adjustment Bureau also have a massive impact on the plotline and also put in exceptional performances, John Slattery as Richardson and Terence Stamp as Thompson.

Conclusion: The Adjustment Bureau Film Review
The Adjustment Bureau is yet another outstanding film based on a story from Philip K. Dick and joins other brilliant films such as Blade Runner, Total Recall, Minority Report and Next. In essence this is a love story set inside the sci-fi genre. It’s a place where the choices we make we believe come from our own free will, but what if that was merely an illusion?
Ultimately The Adjustment Bureau is a thoroughly entertaining and engrossing movie that never has a dull moment. The story is a gripping one the visuals amazing and the acting of the highest order, what more do you want from a sci-fi thriller romance?
The Adjustment Bureau is a must see sci-fi thriller and a film you need to see and add to your Blu-ray collection.
