I think it’s high time I investigate one of Shameless Screen Entertainment’s 2018 Bluray releases. The film I’ve chosen stars both Ursula Andress and Stacy Keach. It’s also a horror movie about a tribe of Cannibals that live at the top of a mountain in the jungles of New Guinea. So without further ado here’s my The Mountain of the Cannibal God blu-ray review.
- The Mountain of the Cannibal God (1978)
- Genre: Horror
- Directed by Sergio Martino
- UK Rating 18
- Discs: 1
- Released By Shameless Screen Entertainment
- Blu-ray Released: 28 May 2018
Plot
Susan Stevenson (Ursula Andress) is leading a rescue party to find her husband whom has gone missing in the jungles of New Guinea. She recruits Edward Foster (Stacy Keach) to lead the search and also picks up a doctor at a local mission run by Father Moses. The search leads them to a mountain said to be the home to a group of cannibals.
Style / Direction
The film is directed by Sergio Martino with the cinematography handled by Giancarlo Ferrando. It’s not a bad looking film with some breathtaking waterfall and jungle locations.

Music / Audio Effects
The music is composed by Guido & Maurizio De Angelis.
Acting / Characters
Despite having Stacy Keach and Ursula Andress the dialogue is quite clunky and not very well written or acted for that matter. Ursula Andress bears all as the cannibals cover her body, breasts and all in oily substance we really don’t want to know from which it came.
Cast
- Ursula Andress – Susan Stevenson
- Stacy Keach – Edward Foster
- Claudio Cassinelli – Manolo
- Antonio Marsina – Arthur Weisser
- Franco Fantasia – Father Moses
Conclusion: The Mountain of the Cannibal God (1978) Film Review
I’ll start by saying this is not a particularly good film, the acting’s not great but to be fair most of that comes down to poor writing. The story isn’t the most appealing to me at least and the pacing seems a little on the slow side. There are a couple of disturbing scenes including some disembowelment and other unpleasant practices carried out by the cannibals.
Undoubtedly a truly shocking film upon its 1978 release it’s not that shocking today when you consider the Saw or Hostel films.
The famous scene which is even depicted on the box art sees Ursula Andress bare all in a cannibal ceremony in which she finds herself being is covered in a strange substance by two of the female cannibals. It’s all really bizarre stuff and it’s kind of hard to recommend the film, I guess if you are interested in cannibals or cult movies then it’s a bit of a curiosity.
Make no mistake this is not a film for everyone but is probably just about worth a look for the likes of Stacy Keach and Ursula Andress if nothing else. Still it’s also nice to see it been fully restored as I guess the film has now reached cult status amongst many.

Conclusion: The Mountain of the Cannibal God (1978) Blu-ray Review
The film has been fully restored and looks and sound amazing, in fact there are no issues to report. On the extras front there’s a “Making of” feature with director Sergio Martino however as you might expect it’s in Italian and is a little hard going as it lasts some 46 minutes.
The film had some scenes of animal cruelty that have been removed / lessened for obvious reasons and there is indeed a little feature in which director Sergio Martino expresses his regret and how the death of a monkey remains on his conscience. You have to remember that many things occurred from that era that certainly are not acceptable now or then in terms of the use of animals and the director genuinely seems to be upset by what happened on his production.
Extras
- Making of with Sergio Martino (46 mins)
- Sergio Martino on Animal Cruelty (3 mins)
- Theatrical Trailer
- Alternative Italian Credits
