I’m ready for another horror movie, after all it is October! This is The Nun blu-ray review, it’s a film that’s part of the Conjuring Universe film franchise. I really like the Conjuring films so I have high hopes for this latest entry. Is good horror film? Let’s take a look…
- The Nun (2018)
- Genre: Horror
- Directed by Corin Hardy
- UK Rating 15
- Discs: 1
- Released By Warner Bros
- Blu-ray Released: 14 January 2019

Plot
In 1952 two nuns living at the Saint Cartha’s monastery in Romania confront true evil. They attempt to retrieve an ancient Christian relic to prevent a demon from escaping. Things don’t go well leaving just one remaining nun. The demon chases her through the monastery which results in the nun hanging herself. She is discovered hanging outside of the monastery by a villager, Frenchie that is delivering supplies.
News is of this event soon reaches The Vatican and they dispatch Father Burke and Sister Irene to investigate.
Style / Direction
The Nun is a film directed by Corin Hardy with Maxime Alexandre handling the cinematography.
Unfortunately whilst the movie looks the part, creepy and unnerving it actually lacks any real horror scares. I found it all rather disappointing as the story and location are perfect for this type of horror movie. The director simply misses the mark in what should be the scary moments.
As I mentioned the movie has fabulous sets / locations but really should make better use of them.

Music / Audio Effects
The film’s score comes from Abel Korzeniowski and does a pretty good job of building tension.
Acting / Characters
On the acting side it’s all pretty good with Taissa Farmiga as Sister Irene impressing the most. Demián Bichir plays Father Burke but remember this film is called The Nun so his character is not as significant as it would be in other horror movies of this type.
Jonas Bloquet plays Frenchie the good looking French Canadian that lives in Romania near Saint Cartha’s monastery. He provides a little light relief and is a generally likeable character.

Conclusion: The Nun (2018) Film Review
I have to conclude this review by saying I found The Nun to be a slightly underwhelming horror film. It looks and sounds great and even has decent characters and actors. Where it fails is in the direction, it never really hits the heights it should do. It really should have you on edge the whole time yet it never does. The setting is perfect but the horror element is sadly lacking.
If they are to do another film which I think they will then they need to really up the horror aspect. It not a bad film but it really should have been an outstanding one. I’d say it’s certainly worth a watch, just don’t expect too many scares!

Conclusion: The Nun Blu-ray Review
The film only released in 2018 so therefore the picture quality is perfect. There’s nothing particularly interesting with the extras included, it’s all short and shallow stuff.
