The Revenge of Frankenstein Blu-ray Review – A Hammer Horror Classic from 1958

The Revenge of Frankenstein Blu-ray Review

I’m taking a look at the latest Hammer boxset from the Indicator label that includes another four films. First up is the excellent horror film The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958) starring Peter Cushing. The film has undergone a new 4K restoration so let’s find out how it has turned out. So without further ado here’s The Revenge of Frankenstein blu-ray review.

  • The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958)
  • Genre: Horror
  • Directed by Terence Fisher
  • UK Rating 15
  • Discs: 1
  • Released By Powerhouse Films (Indicator)
  • Part of the Hammer Volume Four: Faces of Fear Boxset
  • Blu-ray Released: 28 October 2019

Plot

Following on from the events of the previous film, The Curse of Frankenstein (1957) comes The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958). It starts with Baron Frankenstein set for the hangman’s noose. However the Baron has other ideas and manages to escape and relocates to a new practice in Carlsbruck where he also helps out at the local poor hospital. From here he intends to resume his work.

Style / Direction

The films directed by Terence Fisher whilst Jack Asher is responsible for the cinematography. It’s a brilliantly made film that doesn’t fail to impress.

Music / Audio Effects

The music is provided by Leonard Salzedo and provides that now classic Hammer horror vibe.

Acting / Characters

Peter Cushing is on top form as Doctor Victor Stein aka Frankenstein. There really is only one Dr Baron Frankenstein in my opinion and that has to be Peter Cushing’s version.

I should also say that Francis Matthews is also excellent as Doctor Hans Kleve, Doctor Stein’s enthusiastic assistant.

Cast
  • Peter Cushing as Doctor Victor Stein
  • Francis Matthews as Doctor Hans Kleve
  • Eunice Gayson as Margaret
  • Oscar Quitak as hunchback Karl, the “dwarf”
  • Michael Gwynn as Karl in his new body
  • John Welsh as Bergman
  • Lionel Jeffries as Fritz
  • Richard Wordsworth as Up Patient
  • Charles Lloyd-Pack as President of the Medical Council
  • George Woodbridge as Janitor
  • Michael Ripper as Kurt

The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958) really is one of those must see Hammer horror’s. Peter Cushing is magnificent as Doctor Victor Stein making this a fabulous follow up to The Curse of Frankenstein (1957).
