I really love old black and white horror films especially ones starring Bela Lugosi. Voodoo Man is a 1944 film that recently came out on Blu-ray thanks to the good folks over at Fabulous Films. The question I hear you ask, is it actually worth watching? Let’s find out, so without further ado here’s my Voodoo Man Blu-ray Review.
- Voodoo Man (1944)
- Genre: Horror
- Directed by William Beaudine
- Running Time: 62 mins
- UK Rating 12
- Discs: 1
- Released By Fabulous Films
- Blu-ray Released: 24 June 2019
Three young women disappear whilst driving upon the same road. The police are at a loss but could the local doctor (Bela Lugosi) have something to do with their disappearances?
Style / Direction
The films directed by William Beaudine whilst the cinematography is handled by Marcel Le Picard.
Music / Audio Effects
The soundtrack is a mix of beating drums and a rather eerie piece of music. It’s pretty much perfect for the story and setting.
Acting / Characters
All of the main actors play their respective roles well enough. Bela Lugosi as Dr. Richard Marlowe of course has plenty of presence with those striking eyes that seem to be able to hypnotise any woman. Meanwhile John Carradine plays the doctors rather badly treated henchman.
- Bela Lugosi as Dr. Richard Marlowe
- John Carradine as Toby
- George Zucco as Nicholas
- Wanda McKay as Betty Benton
- Louise Currie as Stella Saunders
- Tod Andrews as Ralph Dawson
- Ellen Hall as Mrs. Evelyn Marlowe
- Terry Walker as Alice
- Mary Currier as Mrs. Benton
- Claire James as Zombie
- Henry Hall as Sheriff
- Dan White as Deputy Elmer
- Pat McKee as Grego
- Mici Goty as Marie
Conclusion: Voodoo Man (1944) Film Review
If like me you simply love old black and white horror films then you going to enjoy Voodoo Man. It’s not the greatest film ever but it does have that feel and tone only films from that period can give us. Bela Lugosi of course puts in a commanding performance merely with a look from those piercing eyes.
For fans of these old horror films it’s a must have on Blu-ray.
