Willy’s Wonderland Blu-ray Review – A Wacky & Weird 2021 Nic Cage Film

Willy's Wonderland blu-ray review

I reviewed pretty much all of Nicolas Cages’ films that are available on blu-ray but here’s a new film from 2021 titled Willy’s Wonderland. Let’s takes a closer look, this is my Willy’s Wonderland blu-ray review.

This is a bit of an odd film which actually is a good thing in my opinion.

It’s a mix of action, comedy and horror, oh and Nicolas Cage never says a word.

Plot

When a drifter’s (Nicolas Cage) car breaks down in Hayesville, Nevada the mechanic refuses payment via credit card. He wants cash and tells the stranger he can earn the money required for the car repairs by working at Willy’s Wonderland as a night-shift janitor. The owner Tex Macadoo shows the stranger the ropes and says he will return in the morning along with his newly repaired car.

Meanwhile a teenager, Liv Hawthorne is trying to burn down Willy’s Wonderland but is stopped by the sheriff. She sees the stranger enter Willy’s Wonderland and decides to return with her friends to get him out.

Inside Willy’s Wonderland the drifter gets about cleaning the place but he soon becomes aware he’s not alone. The restaurant’s eight animatronic mascots Willy Weasel, Arty Alligator, Cammy Chameleon, Ozzie Ostrich, Knighty Knight, Tito Turtle, Gus Gorilla, and Siren Sara seem to be alive!

Style / Direction

Director Kevin Lewis delivers a weird and wacky action, comedy-horror that personally I liked. The art style and lighting is very striking inside Willy’s Wonderland. The cinematographer for the film was David Newbert.

Music / Audio Effects

The film’s score comes from Émoi, but its the ‘Its your birthday’ song that stick in the mind long after the credits have rolled.

Acting / Characters

Even with Nicolas Cage not speaking he still manages to produce a compelling and funny performance. The teenagers are all decent in their roles but this is very much Nicolas Cage’s movie.

Conclusion: Willy’s Wonderland (2021) Film Review

I’m sure some people will hate this movie but I really enjoyed it and appreciate Nicolas Cage and the filmmakers trying something weird and wacky! I mean how many well known actors would have taken on this role?

Cage is always looking for something new and different which should be applauded.

Sure not all of them come off but I really do think Willy’s Wonderland (2021) will become a cult classic, in fact it probably already is!

I strongly recommend you give it a look / chance.

The film is only from 2021 so has no issues on the picture quality side. I’m actually impressed with Signature Entertainment bringing these Nicolas Cage movies to blu-ray instead of DVD only. They also released Jiu Jitsu (2020) on bluray at the beginning of the year. Great job!

On the extras side they have included a few little features that I’ve listed below and are definitely worth a look.
